How to holiday at home – TR Style!
With the entire family at home, it can be difficult to feel like you can have a break. For many of us, holidays abroad this summer were cancelled and with travel restrictions making future holidays uncertain, we are all itching for a break! We know a lot of our customers have been cooped up with their little ones for months now and have exhausted every activity, past-time, and COVID-friendly day out…. So, we’ve put together our top tips on how to feel like you’re on holiday at home.
Make the most of your space
If you are lucky enough to have an outdoor space, make the most of it by setting up makeshift sports pitches, obstacle courses, swing ball, or even a paddling pool. This will be great fun, allowing the kids to run around and get some exercise in.
Treasure Hunt
For hours of fun try creating a treasure hunt around the house and garden using puzzles, clues, treats, and challenges. A great way to get your kids moving and working together to find the prizes!
Camping
You can even set up a tent in the garden, as if you are going camping. Our kids have loved having ‘adventures’ and camping out in the garden on mild summer nights. If you have a fire-pit, you can make a perfect camp meal and toast some marshmallows!
Indoor Activities
If you do not have a garden or the weather takes a turn for the worse, you can still set up fun activities indoors! Building a pillow fort or a cuddly den to watch movies. Or make an obstacle course with everyday objects - a great way to let your kids’ imaginations run wild! Guaranteed to keep the kids engaged and giggling for hours is playing keepie-uppies with balloons… for extra added fun, incorporate it into a game of ‘The Floor is Lava’!
Game Time
With everyone in the house, this is a great opportunity for families to be able to spend time together. Whether you want to play a classic board game, cards, or invent your own, this is a great activity to get the kids’ minds working, and for everyone to get into the competitive spirit!
Family Quiz Time
We all know it is important to exercise, but we must not forget to exercise our brains as well. We may have exhausted ourselves with Zoom quizzes during lockdown but if you have got some time, try and get each member of the house to make their own quiz! You can even invite grandparents and cousins to join in remotely on the fun. This can be a great way to get your kids solving problems, working together, and revising their schoolwork in a fun way.
Art
Creating art, painting, modelling clay and building toys exercises your kid’s creativity and strengthens the language part of their brains too! Getting the kids to create something that you can hang on your fridge or put in the window is a great way to encourage their creative side. Here are some fun art projects we’ve tried and love!
Make your own air-drying modelling clay
Get your kids to create their own sculptures, models and toys by making modelling clay at home with this simple recipe.
All you need is:
- 400g of baking soda
- 200g of corn-starch or flour
- 250ml of water
This recipe makes up to 1kg of clay. Mould and sculpt it into the shape you want and then leave it for a day to fully harden. Your kids can then paint their designs on it with acrylic paints or even nail varnish!
Don’t be afraid to colour outside the lines!
Your kids can now make Thomas Royall’s signature prints your own with our new colouring-in exercise! We’ve taken some of our most loved designs and adapted them for your kids to unleash their creative sides – full of animals, plants and insects. They can even design their own pair of shorts or swimsuit.
